The hydraulics which push the fluid cause the calipers, with brake pads, to squeeze against the spinning rotor in each wheel, creating friction and slowing the vehicle.
If the vehicle has drum brakes in the back, the pressure on the brake pedal will cause a piston to press the brake shoes against the drum.
Normal use will cause the friction material on the brake pads and the rotor surface to wear down and get rusty and dirty, requiring the pads and rotors to be readjusted and replaced.
