Its founder Phil Kavanaugh Sr. was merely 18 years old but had been working on cars in his parent's garage since he was 12 years old.
Phil Sr was known area wide as an expert at frame repairs and was a master craftsman at body and paintwork as well.
The shop lasted a few years at the Preston Hwy location but the condition of the building and the inability to purchase the building just didn't allow things to work out.
After vigorously being recruited Phil Kavanaugh Sr. decided to close the shop on Preston and went back to work at Bluegrass Lincoln Mercury during the day and continued for a few years to run his business at nights and weekends out of his household garage until he found the current property at 1376 Belmar Drive in 1983.

In 1992 the second generation of Kavanaugh's, I started to work in the family business.
I literally started at the bottom, taking out trash and cleaning up behind the guard dogs.
Folks it doesn't get more humbling than that.
Over the years I worked in the shop with my father and with many of the great employees Kavanaugh's has had over the years absorbing every bit of knowledge I could like a sponge.
My father had me learn at least a little bit of every job in the shop.
That way if a guy was out someone could fill his spot.
